Databricks

Data, dev & IT

How to see how much data is in Databricks

  1. Sign in to the Databricks workspace
  2. Open Catalog Explorer and select a table to see its size on the overview
  3. For exact figures, run DESCRIBE DETAIL on each table and note sizeInBytes and numFiles
  4. Add up the tables you need to keep

Record table size in bytes; the shown size covers only the current version, so cloud storage (with time-travel files) is larger.

How to get a copy of your Databricks data

  1. Sign in to the workspace
  2. Run your query in a notebook or the SQL editor
  3. Click the down arrow next to the results table
  4. Choose download as CSV or Excel
  5. Save the file

Users can download notebook or SQL editor results as a CSV or Excel file from the results table. For full tables, an engineer usually writes the data out to cloud storage.

Workspace admins can turn downloads off, and downloads have size limits (about 5GB in the new SQL editor).

Databricks’s official export instructions

These instructions are written by DataFrenzy from each vendor’s public help pages. Menu names can vary by plan and change over time; the official link on each guide is the final word. Screenshots come from each vendor’s own help pages and videos or, where noted, from third-party tutorials credited under the image; dashed outlines are illustrations, not screenshots. Looking up a size or preparing an export never sends anything to DataFrenzy.
