GitLab: see how much data you have, then export it.

Pick a system to see two things: how to check how much data is in it, and how to export a copy. No form, no sign-in.

How to see how much data is in GitLab

  1. Sign in as the group Owner (or project Maintainer/Owner)
  2. Open the top-level group and go to Settings → Usage quotas
  3. Select the Storage tab to see the namespace total
  4. Check the project table at the bottom for each project's share

Record the namespace storage total; it counts repository and LFS storage and updates about every 90 minutes.

How to get a copy of your GitLab data

  1. As a project Maintainer or Owner, open the project
  2. In the left sidebar, select Settings → General and expand Advanced
  3. Select Export project
  4. When the email arrives, follow its link, or refresh the page and select Download export
  5. Repeat for each project (export files are deleted after 24 hours)

Project and group exports are available from project settings; self-managed instances can take full backups.

Container registries and large binaries may be excluded from project exports.

GitLab’s official export instructions

These instructions are written by DataFrenzy from each vendor’s public help pages. Menu names can vary by plan and change over time; the official link on each guide is the final word. Screenshots come from each vendor’s own help pages and videos or, where noted, from third-party tutorials credited under the image; dashed outlines are illustrations, not screenshots. Looking up a size or preparing an export never sends anything to DataFrenzy.
